Iowa State is seeking a certain style of tight end in mind for the new offense and one of the coaching staff’s top targets for the 2017 class is a prospect from Nebraska.

Aurora standout junior Austin Allen has consistently heard from Matt Campbell’s staff and is in the process of figuring out a date for an unofficial visit.

“Iowa State is always keeping in great touch,” said Allen, who also has Power-5 offers from Nebraska and Iowa. “They keep in contact with me every day. I hear the most from Coach Hoodjer, but they all talk to me. They all send me a Twitter message or something every other day. The coaching staff is great with that. It’s probably what impresses me the most about Iowa State.”

The 6-foot-8, 225-pound Allen said that trip to Ames could be as early as this weekend as his AAU basketball team, the Nebraska Bison, is in Ankeny competing in a tournament.

“I may have time to stop up there,” Allen said. “I just need to figure out a time that will work with our schedule.”

Allen said the coaches are selling him on the fact that he could factor into the offense early, given its need for numbers at the position.

“They’ve been telling me how much of a role the tight ends will have in their offense,” he said. “They said they need tight ends right now, so it’s kind of a big spot for them to fill and they think I would be a great addition to the new offense.”

Since the staff is entering its first season in Ames, it has to sell Allen on what the Cyclone program could become in the future.

“They’re proving themselves that they can be one of the top schools in the Big 12, which is of course a Power-5 Conference,” Allen said. “They’re showing how they can build it up with the new staff and what they can become. They’re trying to get good recruits in there to keep it going.”
