It’s been a long recruiting process for a Class of 2017 in-state prospect, who said he’s been in touch with Iowa State through much of his high school career. All of that courtship finally led to an offer from the Cyclones on Sunday night.
Manchester West Delaware tight end John Nagel, who is a Northern Iowa commitment, said he heard from the coaching staff and was relieved to hear the news of his first Power-5 offer.
“They just twitter messaged me on Sunday night and asked me to give them a call,” said Nagel. “They said they had watched my film. Iowa State had been recruiting me ever since my sophomore year, when Coach Rhoads was there. When he left, the new staff picked that up and recruited me a little bit harder.
“It’s been leading up to this and it finally happened. I was just blown away and happy as can be. It was a big one for me and left me speechless.”
The 6-foot-6, 230-pound Nagel has made it clear that he’s been solid with the Panthers, but that things could change if he picked up that long-awaited P5 offer. He appears ready to consider the Cyclones and will likely take an official visit there later this year.
“I’m going to let it sink in for a few days and think about it for however long I need to,” Nagel said. “Then we’ll play it by ear after that. We talked before about my situation with UNI and everything and went over it already. We’ve talked about me taking a visit and keeping a space open for them, but we haven’t discussed a date yet.”
Nagel was on hand for last Saturday’s ISU/Iowa game in Iowa City. He said he’ll likely also take a game-day visit to Ames this fall.
The Cyclones are recruiting Nagel to play the position he currently does in high school.
“When I’ve talked to them they’ve always said tight end,” he said. “I’m just happy to have an offer to go play football at Iowa State. Wherever they put me is where they put me.”
When Nagel committed to UNI, he also had offers from Army, Eastern Michigan, Illinois State and Northern Illinois.
