One of the articles on the KSU board this morning provided this quote, which I think goes a long way in explaining what several posters and Bill Sears' article characterized as poor defense by the Cyclones through the first 3/4 of the game or so.
"We scouted them and saw the way they guard the flare was going to open up that shot, and we worked on it in practice the last couple of days," Williams said. "I had a little motivation and came out and played well."
I think CFH had our defense set up to keep Foster from getting off early and that it worked perfectly until he got loose from a screen on an out-of-bounds play in the latter part of the 1st half, after which he heated up some. (And what a selfish, primadonna he appears to be!) Williams was the beneficiary of our focus IMO and Webber's game plan to get Williams open worked pretty well for quite awhile. Naz was the primary defender shutting down Foster early and IMO did a heck of a good job. IMO if Foster had been able to get off early, we might not have been able to stay close enough to take the lead and win this one. The guy has a great stroke and quick shot, (but appears to struggle to stay within Webber's system and appears impatient with his teammates at times.) So I guess I'm saying Fred out coached Webber by slowing down the most dangerous part of KSU's offense while giving up, for a while, something he could take away later. Anyway, it worked. KSU is pretty obviously a dangerous team that with their bigs are a difficult match up for the Cyclones. Just as obvious, the good guys are rounding into a pretty cohesive unit around a wealth of talent.
The Wildcat articles gave high props to the Cyclones and to Hilton as a tough place to play.
