One connection was all it took.
Marchie Murdock’s previous relationship with a current Iowa State football assistant coach opened the door to a possible transfer by the former Illinois wide receiver. And the 6-foot-1, 190-pound Murdock did announce on Sunday that he’ll be joining the Cyclone football program.
ISU tight ends coach Alex Golesh was at Illinois prior to joining Matt Campbell’s new staff at Iowa State. When Golesh learned that Murdock was planning to leave Illinois after graduating this summer, he went to work.
“Coach Golesh, he just talked to me and convinced me to go on a visit there,” said Murdock, who was in Ames last Thursday and Friday. “I was out there and really liked it. It’s everything I was looking for in a coaching staff and I really like the offense. The position they want me to play gets the ball a lot.”
Murdock is projected to play the M – or slot – receiver in the Iowa State offense of coordinator Tom Manning.
At Iowa State, Murdock will pursue a graduate degree in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies. He majored in communications at Illinois and will receive his undergraduate degree from there at the end of the summer term.
Murdock caught 20 passes last fall for Illinois. He’ll have two years to play two seasons at Iowa State.
