Iowa State hosted a Class of 2017 offensive lineman from Missouri for a Junior Day last Saturday, and the recruit came away impressed with everything about his experience.
Lee’s Summit West guard Matt Gauert came away impressed with much of what he saw while on his visit.
“The hospitality was excellent,” said the 6-foot-4, 290-pound Gauert. “As soon as we walked in, we were talking to coaches and that was great. We toured the facilities and the indoor. The health center and weight room are in there.
“Then we ended the day at Hilton Coliseum watching the Texas game. The overall atmosphere was excellent and fan base was out of this world. When we were in Hilton Coliseum, it was incredible seeing the support that all the fans at Iowa State have for athletics. That was really neat. It was really just a great day.”
As it was with several other recruits on campus last weekend, it was Gauert’s first face-to-face time with the new coaching staff at ISU.
“They were really talking about just trying to win games,” Gauert said. “They’re coming into the program with that being the number one goal. They’re trying to turn the program around and make it into a powerhouse.”
Gauert said he feels good about his chances of picking up a Cyclone offer in the near-future, given his one-on-one time with offensive line coach Tom Manning and head coach Matt Campbell.
“I talked with each of them in private for a little while,” Gauert said. “They really like my size and say it’s just right, as well as my speed. They like my physical domination, being able to get into guys and put them on the ground.
“Coach Campbell invited me back up for maybe an overnight stay to hang out with Coach Manning, see his coaching staff a little bit, watch spring practice and get to know him a little better.”
During the next evaluation period, Gauert said he believes ISU will be down to see him again.
“They want to see me work out at school a little bit,” he said. “They did talk about (an offer) a little bit. They like my size and are going to talk about it a little bit, but they said it would be coming up soon if it happens.”
Gauert is still in search of his first offer, but said he’s been in touch with Kansas State, Miami (Ohio), Missouri, Kansas, Purdue and Nebraska. He attended Junior Days recently at K-State and Miami (Ohio).
