A visit to Iowa State’s spring game may lead to a return trip to Ames for a heavily-recruited four-star defensive back from the state of Mississippi.

Clinton junior Kam’Ron White said Iowa State has maintained a steady presence in his recruitment since the unofficial visit with running back teammate Cam Akers. Assistant coach Lou Ayeni was on campus recently during spring evaluations and now both sides are talking about another stop next month.

“Coach Lou thought I did really well and wants me to come up there on a visit,” said White, the fourth-ranked high school prospect in Mississippi for the Class of 2017 and 16th-ranked athlete nationally.

“He’s working on a date to get me back up there. I think the date we’re working on is June 24th. Iowa State is pretty at the top of the list. I was going to narrow it down, but I’m considering a lot of schools now. I’m probably going to narrow it down before the fall.”

In addition to I-State, the 6-foot-2, 189-pound White has offers from SEC programs such as Arkansas, Florida, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Tennessee. Minnesota also recently came through with an offer.

In order to stand out among a group of Power-5 programs that are closer to his hometown in Mississippi, White says the Cyclones are selling him on a bunch of positives about coming to Ames.

“The coaches are just telling me to not pay too much attention to it,” White said. “They don’t talk bad about a school; they just tell me about Iowa State, how much they need me up there and how I can play a big part on the team.

“They’re looking at me as a safety or cornerback. The coaches really like my athleticism, leadership and character I bring to the secondary.”

While ISU often fights battles just to get a recruit on campus, it’s already had White in Ames and the recruit enjoyed his experience.

“When I went up there, I liked the facilities and coaches,” he said. “I liked how the coaches took time out to talk to me. It was really great to see the fans turn out like that for the spring game. Everything is just great right now between me and Iowa State.”

White says he doesn’t believe he’s close to making a decision, and mentions that the thought of playing with his teammate Akers at the next level has crossed his mind.

“We’ve been taking things pretty slow,” White said. “We would like to go to the same school, but we don’t have to. We both have a lot of the same offers and he’s hearing from Iowa State quite a bit, too.”
