A summertime visit by a Michigan prep defensive lineman could spur the 2021 prospect to make a return trip to Iowa State during the football season.
Warren Mott rising junior Tyson Watson said his visit to Iowa, which also included a stop in Iowa City, changed his perception of the area. The 6-foot-5, 243-pound Watson said he was impressed with what the Cyclones had to offer on and off the field during his day in Ames on July 27th.
“I had never been to Iowa before,” said Watson. “I took a trip around campus and the city area. I liked the way how their downtown is close to the school. Everything is not that far to get to around campus. I also liked the housing situation with the dorms.
“It’s different. You hear about (the state of Iowa) and people say it’s all just grass and there’s nothing to do around there. It was pretty nice and I liked the environment around the school with everything going on.”
As for the football program, Watson said it’s clear that ISU is serious about advancing it to new levels.
“All of the facilities are really nice,” he said. “There were some different things in the weight room that I haven’t seen. Coach (D.K.) McDonald told me that if I was to go there, by the time I got there the new facility would be done. He went over everything with me and it was dope. It would be cool to be in the first class to experience it.”
Watson is considering a return visit for the Northern Iowa game next weekend, a stop in which he’d like to get some time with position coach Eli Rasheed.
“I’m planning on getting up to a game this fall, maybe even for the Northern Iowa game. I really liked the campus and the way it was all laid out when I went up there the last time. Coach Rasheed was on vacation while I was there, but I’ve heard he likes me at defensive end. He likes how I can use my hands, maintain my balance and get leverage on opponents. I can also play tackle and I’ll be playing there this season for my school.”
Watson is a three-star strong-side defensive end prospect with a 5.6 Rivals rating. In addition to his I-State offer, Watson has Power-5 offers from Iowa and Kentucky. Central Michigan, Toledo and Youngstown State have also extended offers.
As a sophomore, Watson racked up 53 tackles, 16 tackles-for-loss and 10 sacks.
