A borderline four-star recruit considered by many to be the top player in the Michigan high school ranks as a junior this past season made the trip to Iowa State this past weekend.
Muskegon’s playmaking quarterback Cameron Martinez, who is being targeted as a wide receiver at the next level, visited campus for spring workouts.
“I talked to the receivers coach and sat down with the head coach,” said Martinez. “I saw pretty much everything like the facilities, field and stuff like that. I really liked watching the practice because of the energy. They were on the move a lot. They were getting in and getting out a lot. It was fast-paced and they were getting competitive and going at each other. I saw a lot of talent out there.
“In my conversation with Coach (Matt) Campbell, we made small talk and he talked about how the program has become and how he’s changing it around. I also had a nice conversation with Coach (Nate) Scheelhaase and we got to know each other. They have some cool coaches.”
The Cyclones, as have many programs around the Midwest, are making a big push for the three-star prospect who has a 5.7 Rivals rating. In addition to his ISU offer, Martinez has Power-5 ones from the likes of Boston College, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Syracuse, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
As a junior signal-caller at Muskegon, the 5-foot-10, 185-pound Martinez did much of his damage as a rusher with 254 carries for 2,527 yards and 38 touchdowns. He also completed 31-of-58 passes for 645 yards and 13 touchdowns to one interception.
If he ends up at I-State, Martinez would provide another boost to another solid offense.
“They’re still wanting me to play inside receiver and want to use me in the slot and get me the ball in a number of different ways,” he said. “They have a really good quarterback, so he was a freshman last year and they’re planning to do big things with him. He can sling it. They want to get the right types of guys at receiver and they use the slot a lot. Especially in the Big 12, you’ve got to put up a lot of points.”
The Michigan prep athlete said he was sold on a number of things about the program during his talk with Campbell.
“We talked a lot about him changing the program around,” Martinez said. “When he got there, a lot of things changed. He had a lot of success at Toledo, too. He’s one of those energetic coaches that gets after it. He coaches his guys really well. He told me I could be a part of something special there. He intends to win a Big 12 championship and needs guys like me to help turn it around more.”
During the conversation, Martinez didn’t tip his hand much on where he was in the recruiting process.
“I said I’m interested,” he said. “With a lot of (offers), I don’t really have any favorites. They’re all pretty level with me. I told him that. Hopefully in the future I can cut it down and things like that. I’m still looking at all my options. I don’t have any official visits set or a top-five yet. We’ll see how it all plays out.”
