A 2020 defensive back prospect with one dozen offers is hearing a lot from Iowa State and is still trying to schedule a visit to Ames.
River Rouge (Mich.) junior David Carter has one Power-5 offer from the Cyclones to go along with 11 others in the G5 ranks. He said one coach in particular at ISU has been in contact with him a lot.
“Iowa State is showing a lot of love right now,” said Carter, who helped lead his team to the first round of the playoffs before losing to King. “I’ve been talking to (D.K.) McDonald, the DBs coach, and I need to get down there to visit for sure.
“They offered me earlier this year and I was very surprised by it. The offer came out of nowhere. I was excited. I need to see everything for myself and what all the coaches are talking about. I was supposed to go during spring practice, but got busy that day. I’ll probably visit during one of the day camps.”
Given much of his interest has come from MAC schools, the 5-foot-11, 171-pound Carter said the offer from McDonald meant a lot in his recruitment.
“I learned I could play in the Power 5 and play in the Big 12,” he said. “I was very excited about that. Iowa State is one of my top schools right now. Coach McDonald has sent me a ton of pictures and videos of how the team did last year, which was very good. They had Hakeem Butler that got drafted and that shows me if I go to Iowa State, I could get drafted. Their DBs up there are really good and they’ve got a good defense. They were up there in the Big 12 in both pass and rush defense.”
Carter is a three-star prospect with a 5.5 Rivals rating. In addition to ISU, his G5 offers include Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Michigan, Florida Atlantic, Northern Illinois, Ohio and Western Michigan.
At ISU, Carter said he would be pegged to play cornerback.
“They like my size and could develop me a little more,” he said. “I have great technique and can play up against big receivers. I can ball out on the field. They know that I’m a ball player and just some camp player that only balls out there. I shine when the lights are on.”
Carter’s next opportunity to shine in front of McDonald should come at a showcase in Michigan next week, but says he’s also looking to visit for one of the Cyclones’ camps in June.
“Coach McDonald wants me to come to Iowa State so bad and shows so much love,” he said. “They really love how I play and want to see me ball out down there. They want to see how I work with them, which shouldn’t be any problem because I’m very coachable.”
