But..
Is anyone really that suprised?
1. Lose to UNI, which we never should. I would argue we are 7-10 points better than they are right now and by end of year will be 10-17 points better. BUT, we had back breaking penalties after positive plays and had brutal turnovers.
On defense I believe we held our own and over time got tired. Our LB's being slow hurt us with Bailey, but I think overall Run D was satisfactory.
If you would have given me the turnover and penalty total and told me the final score that happened before the game I would have believed it.
2. Crushed by Iowa. Not surprised at all, really. Outside of the fact they looked pretty sloppy in first game. By the way, I think they played nearly perfect in the first half on offense against us. Very similar to 2010 game.
Anyway, Iowa is a terrible matchup for us.
On offense they have a classic Iowa QB who manages game well within system, but also has a little extra talent. My opinion would be he is the best QB I've ever seen at Iowa, I'm too young for Chuck Long. They ran ball well, but Beathard is the guy that made that game a route, amazing throws and a great game by VanDeBerg.
On Defense, they have a solid front four. The KF defense has always been bend don't break, stay in your lane, and make the offense earn their points. When your front four doesn't get a push it's harder to make it work. Our OL is bad, and we knew that coming in. SO, we had to dink and dunk to succeed. Like '07, '11, '12, and '14. All games won with the dink and dunk. What does that require? Accuracy. Lanning is not accurate right now, I have doubts that he ever will be.
Now am I saying we win if our QB is accurate and Beathard doesn't make all those tough throws? Hell No. They are just too good up front and we are too bad up front on both sides of the ball. But I do think it could have been 31-17 instead of 42-3.
That was a long winded way to say--I'm not surprised how the first 2 games went OUTSIDE of the throw your hands up stupid penalties and at times a bit of a "lost" look from the team.
But it's year 1! We had much more turnover from rhoads to campbell compared to chizik to rhoads. I may need a fact check on that, but I'm pretty confident.
CPR recharged the fan base. But for several reasons could not keep the fire stoked that he had sparked. It was time.
We got a new guy, it's been about is bad as it can get the first two games. But, it's two freaking games! Let's see what we can do!
The key to this staff succeeding is controlling the line of scrimmage, give them time to try and acheive that. Watch for that improvement as weeks go by. Let's hold them accountable on the penalties and the game management, of course. But maybe give a bit of a break in week 1 and 2?
My take, thanks for reading
