Opening comments:

“There’s really not much from the TCU game to recap. I think I felt exactly after that football game that there were some positives and some areas we need to continue to work on both offensively and defensively. I thought that we played outstanding on special teams throughout the football game. We had a great practice last night. We have a great challenge ahead of ourselves. It’s great to be back home. I feel like we certainly owe our fan base to come out and play our best football game of the year so far this Saturday.”

On how he envisions the quarterback rotation will play out this weekend:

“I still think that’s an open-ended question. To detail that is unfair until we go through practice. I think both of those guys earned the right to play last week. I felt it helped both of them. I thought it helped Joel catch his breath and maybe see and sit back for a series and see what was going on. It was good to get Jacob into the football game. That’s the first meaningful reps that he’s ever gotten at least with the score still meaning something. Jacob earned that through practice and through fall camp. We’ve slowly progressed him and tried to put him in the best position he can be successful in a game. We’ll continue to compete at that position. I really trust both those guys to play. They both have skill sets that can really help our football team be successful.”

On if he will script the rotation out two series, two series, etc.:

“I think you could. We’re still trying to figure that out. We’re still a new coaching staff that’s trying to figure out what our players can and can’t do. We didn’t have Jacob for spring practice and the first part of fall camp. Trying to figure out what he is and what he can do…we’re still learning. What Joel can do and continue to do…he’s getting better and played his best football of the year on Saturday. He continues to work really hard to help us be successful. We’ll continue to navigate that. Sometimes that’s a feel deal. I’ve been down that road before. The only thing you can do is be honest and do a great job of having a good feel of what’s the best situation for your football team within the game.”

On how he is approaching this non-conference game that will be played after Big 12 opener:

“It’s another huge growth opportunity. We’re continuing to grow as our staff is starting to understand who our players and where we’re at within our program. You think you know, but until the bullets get flying, live action goes and until your kids are put in situations…how do you best put your kids in situations to be successful. You have to go play. We’re getting better every week. You saw that last week and will continue to see that. Take some of the positives that we saw last week and felt last week – why did those happen? How can we apply that and be consistent? That’s the biggest thing we’re missing right now is the consistency.”

On what he thinks led to some of the improvements in the TCU game:

“The biggest difference is our kids are starting to understand what our expectations are. It’s not just about winning and losing football games. Yes, that’s very important and we all know that, but how you win football games is what I’m interested in. We’re getting now into the fourth week of the season.

“It was interesting. We practiced really well in fall camp. The week leading up to our first home football game, I didn’t think we practiced really well. It was interesting of how we rebounded the next week and were so-so. We were a lot better last week. That’s going to continue to get better, because everybody within this building is here to build a program and do it the right way and be consistent. We’re starting to grow in those areas. Our young men are trusting into that and saw some of the fruits of their labor. You saw some success, in terms of what we were trying to get accomplished.”

On if offensive tackle Jaypee Philbert will be available against San Jose State:

“He won’t be. We will make a final decision on what we do with that, but he will not be.”

On if he’s frustrated about the fluctuation in starting lineups on offensive line:

“You certainly want consistency. It will be the first time that we have the same starting lineup in a game this year, which will be a positive. Nick Fett is kind of the unsung hero on the football team. Brian Bobek and Nick Fett, those two guys are what you want as a coach. Fett started the first game at right tackle, then he moves to left guard and then he moves to left tackle last week against pretty good pass-rushing defensive ends. He played extremely well. Brian Bobek is the steady force in there and has been a lifesaver. We’re starting to get some continuity. Brian Seda came in and played really well. I want to say he played 70-plus snaps at left guard.

“We’re starting to find our niche, we’re starting to get where we need to go. There is some competition there, still some guys that can play that aren’t starting who are improving. Patrick Scoggins (has been solid). Julian Good-Jones is starting to come on, played well in the Iowa game and did some good things last week. He’s a young freshman that will get better one day at a time.”

On what he needs to see from defense in order for it to improve its play:

“The biggest thing defensively is we have to continue to tackle better. Some of those big plays occurred with both sets of teams that we played the last two weeks came from missed tackles. We need to do a great job of eliminating the big play. There were some circumstances last week of the big plays coming out. That group also needs to settle into who we are and what our roles are. We got a lot of guys back and tried to figure out where we fit when (D’Andre) Payne comes back (Nigel) Tribune comes back. We’re trying to get guys back healthy. Willie Harvey missed most of the first game and he’s coming back. We’re trying to find their rhythm and settled into what they can do.”

On what it will take for the team to turn the corner and get its first win:

“The greatest concerns is the how-to. It’s not players or anything else. It’s detail, how-to, practice habits, all those kinds of things. That’s what is going to allow us to have success. That’s the starting point. Those areas need to get fixed. That’s our job, it starts with me.”
