A central Iowa linebacker with an offer from Iowa State was a frequent visitor to the campus during the spring and could be close to making a decision in the coming months.

Although West Des Moines Dowling Catholic’s Jake Hummel was unable to attend the spring game because of a track meet, he was on campus numerous occasions getting a feel for how the Cyclones practice under the new staff.

“Their age really sticks out to me and how energetic the entire staff is,” said Hummel, who was most recently on campus for the scrimmage on April 9. “You can tell. Even in their practices, the energy is so high and everything is fast and high-tempo. They get their conditioning in through their tempo and it’s pretty cool to see how they do that.”

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Hummel is currently a three-star recruit that’s rated as the No. 9 prospect in the state of Iowa. In addition to ISU, he’s also receiving interest from Minnesota, Kansas State and South Dakota.

I-State has certainly put in the hours on Hummel’s recruiting trail.

“They’ve been contacting me a lot lately, throughout the week they’ll message me on Twitter and what not,” Hummel said. “We just kind of keep up with each other. They’ve continued to show a lot of interest and how much they want me. I’ve been in touch with Coach (Tyson) Veidt a lot. He keeps relaying to me how much of a good fit it would be for me to go there and really contacts me a lot throughout the week.”

While the Cyclones are showing a lot of interest in Hummel, the linebacker has certainly done his homework on the Power-5 program and his potential place within it.

“I went down and watched how the linebackers worked together and how they run the practices,” Hummel said. “I think I would fit in pretty well. They like how I play and I can see how they’d think I would fit in so well. They said they like me the most at the inside linebacker position, but want me to learn all three of the positions including the Leo. They like my speed to the ball and how I can get into pass coverage as well.”

Since taking over as the leader of the Cyclones, head coach Matt Campbell has had an open-door policy for coaches across the state of Iowa.

One of those who’s made the trip to Ames is Hummel’s high school coach Tom Wilson. Hummel said the long-time Maroons coach came away impressed with the group that’s now in place.

“He told me how much he liked their new staff and even said it would be a pretty good fit for me there,” Hummel said.

With all signs pointing toward the Cyclones as Hummel’s future home, the linebacker said he’d like to get a few things done first before making any type of decision.

“I’m probably going to wait until after the school year and after track is over, and then make a decision then,” he said.
