On Tymar Sutton playing as a true freshman:

At this point we don’t know. He’s got a cast on his hand so he’s been doing limited what he can with that. He had a really good summer; is a talented kid. We just don’t know a lot right now in live drills cause he hasn’t been able to do a whole lot. He just had a hand injury through the summertime, basically fighting through it, fighting through it. We had it x-rayed a little bit and he’s got a little bit of a break in there. So yeah, that’s all that’s going on right now. For any guy it’s frustrating; especially a young guy that’s trying to come in and make his mark. And obviously we’re trying to get a look at a young guy and build some depth at that position. So yeah, everybody’s disappointed to a degree. But we’ve got guys that are certainly working hard and battling and winning starting roles right now.

On Willie Harvey’s camp performance to date:

Willie obviously again, he’s a talented kid like we talked through the spring. He was sick for five days so another guy that’s missed time on the field. Which is difficult when you’re doing new things. As we go into it, you get your spring practice and then you’re only at a certain point in the fall camp, you’re less than 30 days into a new defense. When you miss five or six because you’re sick and then all the things that get added in, you’re behind a little bit. And you can’t do anything conditioning wise when you’ve got an illness like he had. So you’re in trouble a little bit that way. So he’s playing catch up right now.

On whether Harvey is back to 100 percent physically now:

He is, yeah. So this will be, today will be his second day back. So he is back, he is 100 percent right now. But again missing those days where you can’t do cardio, you can’t do things; he didn’t have an injury where he could do things like that. So he’s just set back that way. But he’s got to get back and get going so we’re working him back into that now in full pads actually.

On Bobby McMillen’s camp performance to date:

Bobby’s playing a couple of different spots for us. He’s playing inside; he’s playing outside. He’s going to be a really good special teams player for us, we know right now for sure. So he’s learning two positions. He’s had some good days; he’s had some bad days. Like with all of our guys, our biggest challenge right now – Bobby included – is trying to put consecutive days together that are solid days. We haven’t done a very good job as a position at that. That’s really what we’re striving for right now.

On Reggan Northrup’s camp performance to date:

I sound like a broken record at this point. So Reggan was doing a really nice job, increased his reps with the [illness] to Willie. Tenth play of the scrimmage on Sunday, Reggan pulls up with a hamstring. So he’s been out the last couple of days. It’s nothing serious; he’ll be back here in a couple of days. But again, he’s going to be four or five days out and it’s the same thing. When you’ve got a hamstring injury you aren’t able to do a lot and condition and those things.

On the depth at linebacker:

Though we’ve had the injuries, we’ve been able to work some guys. Fortunately there haven’t been two or three guys out simultaneously. If that were the case we’d be in big trouble. So we’ve been able to mix and match a little bit with that happening. The good news is, nothing is a long-term injury. The guys will all be back, or are, within the next two days. So we’re just doing the best we can mixing guys up and having them learn a couple of spots. That will naturally help us with our depth, too.

On any other linebackers standing out in camp:

A guy that’s put consecutive days together is Kane Seeley. Has done a nice job with that. He’s a consistent player. Really our most consistent guy at the linebacker spot right now is Kane. Brian Mills has had consistent days as well. And again, Reggan Northrup was putting consistent days together prior to the point in the scrimmage. Those three guys for us right now have been the most consistent.

On Seeley taking a big leap from last year:

We do have him in a different spot than he played previously. I think that has helped him with what he’s doing. I believe it’s a more natural spot for him with his physical make up. He’s an extremely intelligent guy so regardless, that’s going to put him half a step ahead of some guys. He’s able to help others with his communication skills and that’s really important, obviously, as you know at the linebacker spot. So that gives Kane an edge over some other guys.

On Seeley’s leadership level this fall:

It’s continued from the spring into the summer. He had a really good summer. He’s really a guy that understands what we’re doing on defense. Not just at his position but others. Naturally that helps a guy. And he’s able to help others that way so that’s really important for him and for all of us as a defense.

On linebackers adjusting to new defensive schemes:

They’re doing a nice job. They’re certainly working at it. They’re studying film extra. They’re taking notes. They’re doing a good job with all of those things. Again, it’s back to the point where we haven’t been in anything we’re doing for a very long time. Naturally we’re going to put consecutive days together, that’s our goal, but we still have to keep adding things that we’re doing so we can advance in the playbook and be ready for week one and so on.

On how the SAM linebacker position will be used:

It really depends on what we decide we’re playing at the time. Some of that stuff is predicated by who we’re playing. So it’ll be a position that will play every game. How much, really that gets dictated by the game.

On ways to use Harvey and Northrup at the same time:

There is, and we’ve done that here yet this fall camp, too. So they’ve both been on the field simultaneously and we’ll do some things where they do that. Absolutely, yep.
