It has had many owners and names through the years but my generation knows it as the Hiway Cafe. The are versions of it in many small towns. Lots of memories eating there with the parents as a kid and later in high school meeting friends there after games. It had new life in the last year or two as the "Buck Snort", but went up in flames earlier this week and was a total loss. Sad for those of us that grew up in Oakland.
Oakland is east of Omaha/Council Bluffs on Highway 6 and 59. I80 used to end at Avoca and route everyone off on 6 through Oakland for about 40 miles until you picked it back up in Omaha. Lots of traffic went though town when I was a kid. I always wondered where east of Omaha was in Bob Seger's Turn The Page. I just found out he wrote that song at the Hiway Cafe, or so they are saying on my high school's Facebook page. So with that news I dedicate this song to the Hiway Cafe.
