The son of a former Iowa State football recruit is getting a look by the same school after having a successful junior season.

Class of 2018 defensive end prospect Trey Laing of Tallahassee (Fla.) Leon picked up his offer from Coach Eli Rasheed who has been in touch with the recruit for several months.

“It all started back in the spring when Coach Rasheed from Iowa State came here, saw me and was real excited about what he saw,” said Laing, whose father Trace was recruited and offered by former head coach Jim Walden before going to the JUCO route and later ending up at Eastern Michigan.

“He said he would keep me informed and be in communication. I had a pretty good season and led my team in sacks. They pulled the trigger and offered. I was very excited because Coach Rasheed expressed to me that I could be a big part of their package on the defensive line.”

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Laing said it’s his relationship with Rasheed that has helped put the Cyclones at the forefront of his recruitment.

“We text almost every day, if not every other day, and he just preaches to me that I’m a great edge rusher in the 2018 class and he likes me a lot,” Laing said. “He thinks I would be a big part of the defensive line. He loves the way I use my hands, get off the ball quick and use my athleticism against my opponent.”

In addition to having the personal connection with his father having been to Ames, Laing said he’s done his own research of the current state of affairs at I-State and likes what he’s seen.

“Iowa State was my dad’s first offer in high school, he took an official visit there and loved the campus,” Laing said. “I watch YouTube videos and love the way they run their package. The facilities look great and everything is new.”

Laing won’t sign with a program until February of 2018, but says he already has a favorite on his list.

“Iowa State is at the top of my list right now, just because I talk to them every other day and how much they’ve stressed that they like me,” he said. “My recruitment has been blowing and I’ve gotten interest from a lot of schools like South Carolina, Kentucky, Central Michigan and Charlotte. I also have my other two offers from Florida Atlantic and South Alabama.”

An unofficial visit won’t happen for Laing in the near-future, but he says hopefully next spring or summer he can make his way to ISU.
