An in-state junior athlete with a Cyclone offer is planning to be in attendance this Saturday afternoon when the Cyclones take on the Hawkeyes at Jack Trice Stadium.
Iowa City West Class of 2021 prospect Marcus Morgan, who earned an offer from the Cyclones this past April, said he’s looking forward to what will be his third stop in Ames.
“It’s awesome and will be an awesome atmosphere,” said Morgan. “The rivalry is awesome. It’s great that (ESPN) GameDay is going to be there. It’s going to be a neat experience. I’ve only been to one Cy-Hawk game and that was at Kinnick when I was younger, so it’ll be a really cool experience for me.”
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Morgan said he’s steadily built some strong connections to members of the Iowa State staff. He visited for a Junior Day in March, attending a basketball game and getting campus tour. Morgan followed that up with a Saturday Night Lights camp visit in June.
“Things are going pretty good,” he said. “I’ve met all of the coaches and have been up there two times. I’m about to go up there again this weekend for the game. We have a pretty good relationship. I’ve talked with Coach (Matt) Campbell on many occasions and I’m pretty cool with all the coaching staff.”
Listed as an athlete in the Rivals database, Morgan said the Cyclones would give him a shot to play quarterback first if he signs in the 2021 class. That was the focus of his camp visit over the summer.
“They like me as a dual threat,” he said. “I can pass it and throw it. I fit into their style of offense pretty well. They run a lot of spread and shotgun things, and I think I fit into that pretty well. They run a lot of the same concepts as we run at my high school, so that’s appealing.
“It was really cool to work with the coaches, especially the quarterback coach Joel Gordon. He really knows what he’s talking about and gave me some really good feedback and things I can work on with my footwork and ball placement.”
Through two games of his junior season, Morgan has completed 22-of-44 passes for 371 yards and three touchdowns to three interceptions. He’s played a small role on defense, posting 2.5 tackles.
With one offer to date from I-State, the Iowa City native said he’s endured his share of ribbing from the locals. But Morgan has taken it in stride and talked to a pair of former West High standouts who ended up in Ames.
“Everybody around here are all Hawk fans, so I’ll get some crap for it every once in a while,” he said. “It’s not bad. I’ve talked to some kids out of Iowa City West, like Connor Greene and Alex Kleinow when I’ve gone up there. They really seem to enjoy and enjoy how they run it up there.”
In addition to his ISU offer, Morgan said he’s received interest from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Miami (Ohio), Northern Iowa and South Dakota State.
