A JUCO offensive lineman from the state of Minnesota says he’s gotten some early interest from Iowa State after the coaching staff watched some of his freshman year tape.

Mesabi Range Class of 2018 mid-year transfer Andrew Colvin, who will be on campus on Saturday for a game-day visit, said he has heard frequently from one member of the staff.

“They like me on film and I’ve been evaluated,” said Colvin. “They’re keeping a close eye on me for next year. My (ISU recruitment) just picked up this cycle. Coach Mitchell Moore reached out to me after the staff watched my film. They like that I’m a pretty good blocker, play to the whistle and stay on my blocks until then. He wanted me to get down to campus to watch a game and meet some of the coaches.”

That visit will come this weekend, as Colvin travels from northern Minnesota to Ames to watch the Cyclones face Kansas State.

“I’m anxious to check out the game-day atmosphere, as well as the campus,” he said. “I want to get familiar with Coach (Matt) Campbell. I think he will turn it around soon. It won’t happen overnight, but he’ll get the job done.”

The 6-foot-2, 285-pound Colvin was originally a non-qualifier out of Gainesville (Fla.) Santa Fe High School. He moved on to Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia for one year, qualified and signed with Savannah State.

Colvin opted to transfer out of Savannah State to Mesabi Range, in hopes of garnering more Division I interest. The freshman big man is on track to be a mid-year transfer in December of 2017, but says it will likely be at another JUCO program where he can face better competition.

According to Colvin, I-State has not yet offered but he is hopeful that one may come along in the off-season.

“They have not yet, but I’ve been evaluated and they like me on film,” he said. “I probably won’t get one yet, but may get it later in the spring or so since I don’t graduate until next year.”
