Iowa State is steadily rebuilding its offensive line with a mix of high school players and JUCO transfers who can slot in right away. One of those two-year prospects on the staff’s radar is Chaffey College freshman Ronald Rudd.
The 6-foot-7, 305-pound Rudd, who switched positions to offensive tackle this past fall, was a quick learner and has already secured double-digit offers. Iowa State recently joined the fray and hopes to land the big man for an unofficial visit this summer.
“I talked to my coach and he told me to give Coach (D.K.) McDonald a call,” Rudd said. “He told me that they really liked my film and wanted to extend me an offer. They believe I have great potential to come in, be a great playmaker for them and make an impact. They really liked my athleticism, ability to stay with the defender on pass blocks and not give up a sack, and my ability to be strong and fast enough for run blocks to open up holes.”
Rudd said he’s done his homework on ISU and likes what he’s seen from the new staff.
“I’ve done some research and found they’re a really prestigious school,” he said. “I watched some team workout videos on YouTube. There are some team bonding activities and I like that. I’m ecstatic about the offer. I have high hopes about them succeeding this year. I’m just waiting to take my visit out there. I’m planning that with my father. He’s trying to get some time off from work, so we can go visit this summer to see the campus in person.”
Originally out of A.B. Miller HS in Fontana, Rudd enrolled at Chaffey where he made the switch to offense.
The move has paid off for Rudd, who was a first-team all-conference selection as a freshman in 2015.
“I think it worked out great, because I’ve gotten all these offers including the one from Iowa State,” he said. “I feel like I’m a better fit on offense and that it was my natural offense. I latched onto this position very quickly and learned techniques from my coach to help my team succeed.”
The JUCO transfer says he’s on course to graduate in December and be a mid-year transfer.
In addition to his I-State offer, Rudd has Power-5 ones from Missouri, Louisville, Kansas State, Purdue, Baylor, Washington State, Colorado.
“I have 15 offers but don’t really have them ranked,” Rudd said. “I’m hoping to make my decision by midway through the upcoming season, like in week six during our bye week.”
