Iowa State has long been in the picture for a defensive back from a perennial power in the state of Ohio, who also happens to be the younger brother of a Cyclone star-in-the-making. Now, the coaching staff will finally get its shot to host the Class of 2017 recruit for an official visit.
Cincinnati Colerain three-star senior safety Keontae Jones says he will take his second official visit of the recruiting process to ISU next weekend, after making his first at Indiana over the next few days.
The 6-foot-0, 175-pound Jones said he’s been in frequent contact with coaches on Matt Campbell’s staff over the past several months.
“They bring up how quickly they are changing and how that things will be difference, which I believe, and that everything is a process,” said Jones. “I really like my strong relationship with the coaching staff, plus the education facilities there at Iowa State.”
Jones is also expected to be with three-star teammate, offensive lineman Howard Watkins, next weekend. It’s the duo’s relationship with current Cyclone Deshaunte Jones that could pay dividends for the Cyclones down the road.
“I think he had a great season and that he’s an All-American in the making,” Jones said of his older brother Deshaunte. “He will only get bigger and faster. I’m encouraged by the season he had. I believe he could have played at any school he went to his first year.”
With two visits down early in the month of December, things could get interesting down the stretch for Ohio’s 29th- ranked overall prospect and the number 52 safety nationally.
In addition to having offers from the Cyclones and Hoosiers, Jones also has Power-5 programs Illinois, Iowa, Louisville, Maryland, Purdue, Rutgers, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
Jones has played it pretty close to the vest throughout his entire recruiting process, shying away from naming any favorites or releasing his top schools. Don’t expect that to change anytime soon.
“I don’t have a list or an order of colleges,” Jones said. “I’m still trying to play out the process and take some official visits first before I make my decision.”
