Likely at the top of Iowa State’s wish list at the tight end position is a Class of 2017 recruit from the state of Oklahoma with several Power-5 offers to choose from.

Iowa State assistant coach Alex Golesh was in-school recently with Jenks junior Reese Leitao last week. Now, the 6-foot-4, 230-pound Leitao says he’s now in the process of returning the favor with an unofficial visit to Ames.

“Coach Golesh was in last week to see me,” said Leitao. “They can’t really talk to us, but it was good that he came by to watch practice. We’re finalizing our dates to get to Ames. I think it’s driving distance from my house, so we’re definitely working on it. It will probably be in early to mid June.

“I’ve been in touch with Coach Campbell lately and he’s let me know they’re talking about me, thinking about me at Iowa State and how they want me to come visit. Those have been the two main guys recruiting me.”

I-State has been diligent in its pursuit of Leitao, as the three-star recruit says coaches have remained in steady contact throughout the process.

“(Golesh) said it was good to come out and see me lift and practice, Leitao said. “We’ve continued to build our relationship and keep in touch a lot. They keep telling me how I’m a real great fit for Iowa State.

“Their tight end position kind of mirrors what we do at my high school, so he’s showed me that. The coaches have told me that I’m the number one target they’re on right now. Coach Golesh told me about how the program is coming up, they had a good recruiting class last year and are building a good one now.”

Duke, Illinois, Kansas State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma State and Purdue are also Power-5 programs that have offered Leitao.

Although he hasn’t gotten to the point of making a decision, Leitao says the goal is to have one made prior to the start of his senior season.

“I’m still just going to go through the process completely,” he said. “I’ll be narrowing my schools down at the end of this spring evaluation period. Towards the end of May, I’ll be breaking it down to five, six or seven schools that are at the top of my list. After that, I’ll go to some camps in June and more unofficial visits. After that I’ll be committing.”

As for the Cyclones’ chances of making his final list, Leitao was optimistic, saying “I could definitely, because they view me as a top-notch prospect and I appreciate them for that.”
