Although he won’t be able to attend an Iowa State home game this fall, a junior recruit from the state of Michigan has plans to make it sometime next year.

Southfield standout athlete Anthony Romphf said he remains in contact with his lead recruiter off of the Cyclone coaching staff.

“I talk to Coach (D.K.) McDonald a couple times a month,” said Romphf. “He asks questions about how my season is going. It just ended, so he asked what I’m going to be doing in the offseason and when I’m going to come down to Iowa State for a visit. I might be coming down there in the summertime for an unofficial visit.

“I want to talk to the whole coaching staff, because I really only know Coach McDonald since he offered me. He talked about me coming down for a game day visit, but I haven’t been able to attend any of them. That’s why he said to come down during the summertime.”

The 6-foot-0, 175-pound Romphf, who is listed in the Rivals database as a quarterback, is being pegged to play on the opposite side of the ball in Ames.

“(McDonald) has talked about how he likes his corners and how they’re playing physically and mentally,” Romphf said. “He’s talked about what defense they run and simple stuff like that.”

Since he will not be in Ames this fall, Romphf said he’s followed the program from afar and visited often with a former teammate and current Cyclone.

“I watch all their games on TV and have a close friend of mine that plays for Iowa State, Richard Bowens,” Romphf said. “He’s always talking about me coming down there and committing. He jokes that I could come down there and take over his spot. He tells me how good the school is and the coaches show you a lot of love.

“From watching on TV, I like the fan base and atmosphere. I’m really into energy and I know Iowa State brings a lot of energy during their home games.”

Romphf, who did make it to I-State last spring for an unofficial visit while with the Rising Star Bus Tour, also has Power-5 offers from Indiana and Pittsburgh to go along with several G5 programs in the MAC.

He said the Cyclones have remained high on his list.

“Iowa State is up there in my number one,” Romphf said. “I could see myself going there. I’m in the process of picking up more offers, so I’ll have a lot of choices. But Iowa State will always be at or near the top.”
