A four-star running back that’s ranked in Rivals’ Top-200 prospects nationally has cut his list down to seven and is in the final stages of scheduling an official visit to Iowa State during the summer.
Quincy Senior (Ill.) rusher Jirehl Brock said he already had the Cyclones high on his list, but the addition of a new position coach has helped solidify the football program even more.
“I really like Coach (Matt) Campbell and Coach (Nate) Scheelhaase,” said Brock, who has a 5.8 Rivals rating, is considered the 11th overall running back in the nation and second in the state of Illinois for the 2019 class.
“They have been so active in recruiting me at Iowa State. They came to one of my basketball games. I had already created a really good relationship with Coach Scheelhaase when he was at Illinois and that kind of carried over. Some of the recruits that they have there too, they’ve been talking to me. They are people I can see myself being on a team with.”
I-State has kept up its push for Brock and the junior was one of the first prospects visited when the spring evaluation period opened.
“Coach Scheelhaase came to our school about a week or two ago,” Brock said. “I’ve been talking to him ever since. We’re just trying to figure out a date for me to come on campus for an official visit, since I’m looking to make my decision towards the end of summer. That’s been what our focus is.”
The 6-foot-0, 200-pound Brock said the tentative date for that official visit is the weekend of June 22-24. He’ll likely head to Northwestern the weekend prior. Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota and Purdue have also made Brock’s cut.
“I trimmed my list to seven schools a couple weeks ago and I’m still planning to decide late in the summer,” he said. “My list has not changed.”
Brock said there are several positives about the Cyclones that could lead him to Ames in the 2019 class.
“It’s opportunity,” he said. “I’m going to have an opportunity to come in and be a part of a program that’s been brought up since Coach Campbell has been there. It’s an opportunity to be a part of something bigger than myself as well. Knowing and talking to Coach Campbell a lot, he’s a really good guy that I could see myself playing under.”
The talented high school rusher also answered the question that could come up later in the 2018 football season and how that could impact him.
“Nothing coming from (David Montgomery), but I do think there’s a pretty good chance if he has a pretty good year that he’ll go to the draft," Brock said. "That’s just more opportunity for me to come in and be able to fill that spot. Even if I need to sit behind somebody else, it would be an honor. If he does stay, it would be a year for me to learn playing alongside someone like him. He knows more and could help me grow as a player.”
