By extending an offer to an Ohio defensive back in the 2020 class earlier this week, Iowa State has gotten into the running for the three-star prospect.

Trotwood-Madison junior Sammy Anderson said the Cyclones had been aware of him for a while, but said his play of late led the coaches to decide he was offer-caliber.

“I think they’ve liked me since my freshman year when they first came out to see me,” said Anderson. “They said they wanted to see some film. I had forgotten all about it until my coach recently said Iowa State was looking at me. He told me to call (Coach Bryan Gasser), I called him and talked to him for a little bit, and he offered me.”

The 6-foot-2, 165-pound Anderson has a 5.6 Rivals rating, is considered the 16th overall prospect in Ohio for 2020 and the 39th at his position nationally.

In addition to I-State, Anderson has a Power-5 offer from Boston College, Georgia Tech, Purdue, Virginia and West Virginia to go along with G5s Ball State, Bowling Green, Cincinnati and Toledo.

The rangy defensive back said he has improved in a number of facets this season.

“I’ve worked a lot on my coverage ability,” Anderson said. “I got a lot quicker and faster, plus I think I can see the field differently now from last year. I read things from the defenses and how they’re standing. I know what routes they’re going to run and what they’re going to do.”

For I-State, it’s the versatility that Anderson brings to the field.

“(Gasser) said he could see me fitting in there,” Anderson said. “I can see myself fitting in there, too. He said he likes the way I play. Most corners only can do one thing on the field, cover or come up and hit. He said I can come up and do both. I’m also really good in man or zone coverages.”

Although it’s still early in the process, Anderson said he likes that he and ISU’s staff are getting off on the right foot and could see himself visiting at some point.

“I’ve been watching them a little and think they have a good program,” he said. “I like the coaches. They’re cool and not like how other coaches are. Other coaches will tell me about their program, but (their coaches) don’t tell me much about that as they about them personally.”
