Iowa State became the first to offer a Class of 2017 safety from the Florida high school ranks last week and hopes to get the recruit on campus before the prospect’s senior year starts.
Seffner Armwood’s Mekhi LaPointe said he made contact with a Cyclone assistant coach who shared the news with him.
“My coach had told me I was going to get offered, then Coach (Tyson) Veidt from Iowa State coach direct-messaged me and then we talked a few minutes after,” said LaPointe. “He said I was going to get a full scholarship. I was surprised at first, but then really happy. Coach Veidt said I’d fit into their defense well at safety. They liked my film and ball-hawking skills.”
The 6-foot-1, 180-pound LaPointe said he’s liked what he’s read about the I-State program.
“I’ve really gotten to like their program and where it’s headed,” LaPointe said. “I didn’t know where it was before, but I’ve gotten to know more about the city. I like the conference they play in and I know the teams in it do great things and play good competition.”
LaPointe, who said an ISU coach will be at his school during spring evaluations, would like to take an unofficial visit to ISU during the summer months.
Just a few days after his ISU offer, LaPointe picked up one from Toledo and said he thinks North Carolina could be close to jumping into the fray.
LaPointe led the state of Florida with 10 interceptions this season and was named to the All-Hillsborough County team.
