Although Iowa State likely will not get the linebacker it had coveted at a California JUCO, the coaching staff is making a late run at a mammoth offensive lineman in the same program.
Fullerton sophomore T.J. Storment, who comes from the same squad as heralded linebacker Caleb Johnson who de-committed from the Cyclones and is looking elsewhere, said a member of the coaching staff was in on Wednesday.
“They made contact in the first couple games of this season, but then I did not hear from them for a while,” said Storment. “Then they called last week and said they decided to take a JUCO offensive lineman, because they had a need for someone who could play right away. They said I was that guy. Coach (Jeff) Myers flew in for a home visit today and they offered. Coach (Matt) Campbell called me shortly after.”
The 6-foot-7, 316-pound Storment had signed with Old Dominion out of Statesville (NC) High School in the 2016 recruiting class. He redshirted that season and played in five games at right tackle during the 2017 campaign, before transferring out west and competing for Fullerton this fall.
That move has served to be a good one for Storment, who committed to Colorado State less than one month ago. Now he’s been flooded with late interest from the likes of ISU and Colorado, among others. For the Cyclones, it’s to fill the need for a veteran presence on the offensive line.
“I am not sure why it has taken off this week, but all glory to God; I’m thankful for the opportunities,” Storment said. “They said they loved the way I play and that they are not recruiting me to be a backup. Coaches have said they love my aggressiveness and how I can move for a big man. They also say that I am coachable.”
With the days ticking away until the December signing period – Storment plans to sign next Wednesday and enroll somewhere next month – the time is limited for him to make a final decision. Will he stick with the Rams or look elsewhere? He says the ISU staff has offered him an official visit slot for this weekend, but he’s undecided yet on whether to take them up on it.
