An injury cost an Iowa State defensive back commit a few weeks during the middle of his senior season, but the prospect bounced back with a solid finish and has now turned his attention to the next step in his football career.
St. Petersburg (Fla.) senior Anthony Johnson, who committed to the Cyclones last spring, helped lead his team into the playoffs this fall.
“I missed (two) games with a knee injury and came back at the end of the season,” said Johnson. “I ended up getting an interception, so that was good. Now I’m looking forward to going up to Iowa State on an official the weekend of December 8th.”
The 6-foot-1, 160-pound Johnson said next month’s trip to Ames will be much more low-key than the one he took prior to his commitment.
“The last time I was up there for an unofficial, I was there for like three days from maybe 9 to 6 every day, so I believe I’ve seen everything,” he said. “This time it will be nice to bring my mom and get to know the other recruits.”
Johnson also said he’s looking forward to catching up with his future team, which will be preparing for its first bowl appearance under head coach Matt Campbell.
“They’re excited to have me and are having a pretty good season,” he said. “Raising the standard is exactly what they’re doing. It’s very important to me to see the program turn around like this. I like the defense they’re playing right now and think I will be a good fit. I like watching (Brian) Peavy and (D’Andre) Payne play in the secondary.”
Since his commitment, Johnson said he’s been in steady contact with the coaching staff and is still feeling the love.
“I’ve talked to all of the coaches and we’ve remained in touch,” he said. “They also send me a lot of edits and things through the mail.”
