I finally got around to looking at old Visions magazine from Winter 2018 that I had misplaced. It featured Iowa State's Land Grant Heritage and I learned something I never knew. I suppose many of you already knew this, but it was news to me. The Morrill Act provided more than the land on which Iowa State was built. Land was given throughout the state, mostly in the northwest, to finance the beginnings of the college. Many people in that area of the state own and farm that land. Many had no idea their land was part of Morrill Act land that was granted to the states to fund colleges that would provide instruction in agriculture and mechanical arts.
I don't know if that the land that was part of the Morrill Act is limited to parcels in the northwest corner of the state, but the story sure makes it appear that way. This is probably old news to many of you farmers in that area of the state. This is recommended reading for those that knew nothing about the extent of the Morrill Act.
