First Quarter:

Iowa State’s defense continued its solid play from last week, holding West Virginia to just one first down before forcing a punt. The key play came when Skyler Howard was sacked by Willie Harvey for a five-yard loss on 3rd-and-5. After a shanked punt by the Mountaineers, the Cyclone offense took over possession at midfield.

The Cyclones got in gear on the first play from scrimmage when Jacob Park hit a wide-open Trever Ryen over the middle for 26 yards. However, I-State’s chances at a touchdown were thwarted when Dondre Daley and Brian Bobek were called for holding penalties on second and third downs, respectively. Park did manage to get his team back into field-goal territory with a nice 19-yard strike to Hakeem Butler. One play later, Cole Netten split the uprights from 41 yards out to give the Cyclones a 3-0 lead with 11:18 left in the first quarter.

After recovering a surprise onside kick from the Cyclones following the Netten field goal, West Virginia used a ground-heavy approach to pick up its first score of the game. Justin Crawford rushed five times for 14 yards, and Howard picked up a tough one yard on 4th-and-1. Then the Mountaineers got a 34-yard touchdown pass from Howard to Ka’Raun White to take a 7-3 lead with 9:01 left in the first quarter.

Iowa State’s offense approached midfield on the ensuing possession when Park connected with Allen Lazard for 17 yards on a 2nd-and-8. However, three plays later Mike Warren lost a fumble after injuring himself on a rush that lost two yards. Justin Arndt of West Virginia caused the fumble and Christian Brown recovered at the Mountaineer 46-yard line.

WVU went deep on the second play following the fumble recovery as Howard completed a 50-yard pass to Shelton Gibson down to the ISU 1. Then on 2nd-and-goal from the three, Kennedy McKoy capped off the scoring drive with a touchdown run and the Mountaineers led 14-3 with 5:10 to play in the quarter.

Kene Nwangwu had the answer for I-State on the ensuing kickoff, fielding it at the three-yard line and splitting the heart of the West Virginia coverage team and going 97 yards for a touchdown. Netten’s PAT cut the deficit to 14-10 with 4:56 left in the quarter.

Jay Jones recorded the second ISU sack of the first quarter, bringing down Howard for a seven-yard loss on 3rd-and-7 to bring out the Mountaineer punt team. The Cyclone offense would then take over at its own 11-yard line. After hitting Ryen for a 12-yard gain on first down, Park connected with Lazard for a 67-yard pass play down to the WVU 10. However, three plays later ISU would have to settle for a 28-yard field goal from Netten which he made. The Mountaineers led 14-13 with 43 seconds left in the quarter.

Advantage: West Virginia.
