Third Quarter:
Although the Cyclones had good field position on many of their drives in the first half, it only led to 10 points on the scoreboard. But wide receiver Dondre Daley helped change those fortunes by catching a pass over the middle from Sam Richardson, making one defender miss, and taking it to the house for a 36-yard touchdown. ISU opened up a 17-7 lead with 10:05 left in the quarter.
An ill-advised kickoff return by Savon Higgins, in which he picked up a dropped ball in the middle of the end zone and took it out anyway before being tackled at the three-yard line, killed UNI’s next drive before it even started. ISU’s defense kept the pressure on and forced a Panther punt six plays later. Allen Lazard returned it to midfield to set the Cyclones up with great field position once again.
ISU’s defense recorded two more sacks of the Panthers on the following drive, as Gabe Luna brought Aaron Bailey down on first down for an eight-yard loss and Demond Tucker chased the quarterback down near the right sideline for a six-yard loss. UNI was forced to punt and it was Lazard again returning for big yardage down to the Panther 23-yard line.
Three plays later, it was Richardson going back to ISU’s punt return specialist Lazard for a 13-yard touchdown pass in the right corner of the end zone. On the previous play, Richardson had gone to true freshman Carson Epps for seven yards and a first down at the 13. I-State opened up a decisive 24-7 lead with just 1:03 left in the quarter.
Advantage: Iowa State.
