Fourth Quarter:

UNI’s offense couldn’t put points on the board after another impressive drive into Cyclone territory, as Austin Errthum’s 49-yard field goal sailed left of the upright. The Panthers again dominated in the run game, rushing 12 consecutive times against a worn-down defense for 49 yards. Linebacker Kane Seeley came up with the key play for the defense when he dropped Aaron Bailey for a three-yard loss on 3rd-and-3.

Finally, to start the fourth quarter, the ISU offense got into gear thanks in large part to the passing of Joel Lanning. The junior quarterback completed 4-of-5 passes for 57 yards to get the Cyclones back on the board. Lanning threw lofted a pass to the left-corner of the end zone and Allen Lazard made an impossible catch for the touchdown. The connection and ensuing PAT put the home team back in front 20-19 with 7:02 left to play.

With momentum now in its corner, the defense forced the Panthers to a three-and-out and into a punt. Lanning and company took the field with the ball at their own 20-yard line. Lanning rushed for 10 yards on first down and Mike Warren went for six, but on a 2nd-and-4 the quarterback lofted a pass deep that was intercepted by Charles Brown and returned to the ISU 36-yard line.

The Panthers took advantage immediately. Bailey rushed for 22 yards on first down, and then handed it off three consecutive times to J’Veyon Browning for carries of nine, three and two yards. The final carry was a UNI touchdown that put it back on top 25-20 with 2:49 left to play.

Lanning hit Lazard for a 21-yard pass on the opening play of the ensuing possession, but on the second Warren carried one yard before being hit by D’Shawn Dexter and fumbling into the hands of UNI’s A.J. Allen at the UNI 43.

ISU’s defense rose up and forced a Panther three-and-out to give the offense the ball back with just over one minute to play. But on the first play from scrimmage, Lanning threw his second consecutive interception, this one into the hands of Jared Farley who returned it to the Iowa State 46. That sealed the deal in a 25-20 UNI victory.

Advantage: Northern Iowa.
