First Quarter:

Although Northern Iowa was able to pick up a first down on a 17-yard scamper from quarterback Aaron Bailey on 3rd-and-long, Iowa State’s first defensive possession of the season was a smashing success. The Cyclones recorded three tackles-for-loss on the drive and forced the Panthers to punt on a 4th-and-5.

I-State took over at its own 25-yard line and used the legs of Tyler Brown to immediately move into scoring position. The first-year starter rushed four times for 51 yards, including a 34-yarder through the left side of the offensive line.

However, an incomplete pass from Sam Richardson to Allen Lazard in the end zone and a screen pass to Brown was blown up and the Cyclones were forced to try a 38-yard field goal with Cole Netten. The veteran kicker missed the kick wide-left, however, with 7:28 left in the opening quarter.

I-State’s defense forced another punt on the ensuing drive, getting a nice pass breakup from JUCO transfer Jomal Wiltz on a 2nd-and-11. UNI would later punt after being whistled for its second delay-of-game penalty of the quarter.

Advantage: Iowa State.
