First Quarter:

Northern Iowa opened with possession and managed to pick up one first down on an Aaron Bailey to Daurice Fountain nine-yard pass on 3rd-and-7. However, a personal foul penalty on the ensuing first down play ultimately spelled the end of UNI’s opening possession of the season.

Iowa State took over at its own 11-yard line and got a nice 18-yard hookup from Joel Lanning to Trever Ryen on 2nd-and-7. But the drive would stall three plays later after two short completions and one long pass was incomplete.

After the Panthers went nowhere offensively after the punt, Iowa State’s offense took over with great field position when Ryen returned the kick 26 yards to the Panthers 44-yard line. Mike Warren took the first down carry five yards, and then Lanning went deep to the right corner of the end zone to hit Dondre Daley for the touchdown. The pass went 39 yards and put I-State on top 7-0 with 7:16 left in the first.

The Cyclone defense got a steady dose of Bailey throwing and passing on the ensuing drive, as the playmaking quarterback accounted for 53 of his team’s 56 yards. UNI drove to the 19-yard line before its drive stalled out. Austin Errthum’s 37-yard field goal sailed wide left and the game remained 7-0 with 3:58 left in the quarter.

Advantage: Iowa State.
