Second Quarter:
Iowa State’s defense continued to come up big in Texas’ first possession of the second quarter. After an 11-play drive that was largely centered on the ground, linebacker Jordan Harris gathered a Tyrone Swoopes pass on the left sideline before falling out of bounds with possession. It ended a Longhorn drive that had gone more than half the length of the field.
With even more momentum, the Cyclone offense took over but its struggles continued. Although he rushed for 20 yards on first down to cross in Texas territory, Lanning was sacked for a three-yard loss on first down and later threw an ill-advised screen pass to Mike Warren who was hit for a four-yard loss. Lanning’s 3rd-and-17 pass fell incomplete and ISU had to punt.
Texas’ offense went three-and-out for the third time of the first half and after the punt set the Cyclones up for their second scoring drive of the game. ISU went 15 plays and 46 yards over nearly three minutes before Cole Netten came on for a 28-yard field goal, which he converted. I-State took a 10-0 lead with just five seconds remaining in the half.
Advantage: Iowa State.
