First Quarter:
Joel Lanning took the field for his first start as Iowa State quarterback, but fired incomplete on a pair of passes during a three-and-out on the game’s opening possession. Texas’ offense also made a fast exit after three plays, thanks in large part to a Levi Peters sack of Jerrod Heard on 3rd-and-7 which forced a punt.
I-State got the ball back with decent field position after a 10-yard return from Trever Ryen. With one possession under his belt, Lanning was much more comfortable behind center this time around. The sophomore quarterback completed 4-of-5 passes for 47 yards and rushed for a key first down on 3rd-and-11 to move the chains. Mike Warren finished off the drive with a three-yard touchdown run and the Cyclones led 7-0 with 8:38 left in the quarter.
The Longhorns picked up just two first down on the ensuing drive before the Cyclone defense forced another punt. Yet again it was Levi Peters with the big third down sack, as he brought down Heard for a loss of six yards to bring out the punt unit.
Advantage: Iowa State.
