Second Quarter:
TCU tied the score up on the first play of the second quarter when Trevone Boykin found wide open wide receiver Charlie Reid in the back of the end zone. The game was knotted at 21-21 with 14:55 left in the half.
In need of an answer of their own, the Cyclone offense as up to the task. Sam Richardson was again on top of his game, completing a pair of passes for 31 yards. TCU’s defense cooperated with holding and personal foul penalties to keep the chains moving. However, on the 13th play of the drive, Richardson’s option pitch to Mike Warren was mishandled and the Horned Frogs recovered the ball at their own 18-yard line.
ISU’s first three-and-out came on its second possession of the second quarter and after Colin Downing’s punt, TCU took over possession at its own 33-yard line. The Horned Frogs went to a ground-heavy attack to churn out 35 yards. Boykin also completed 2-of-3 pass attempts for 27 yards to help set the offense up with 1st-and-goal from the two.
However, the Cyclone defense would rise up and keep its opponent out of the end zone on three straight rushes. TCU settled for a 23-yard field goal by Jaden Oberkrom and 24-21 lead heading into the locker room.
Advantage: TCU.
