Second Quarter:

The Cyclone defense wised up to a Spartan offense that had been one-dimensional through most of the game. Zamore Zigler got six carries on the opening possession of the second quarter, but netted just 21 yards. On SJSU’s lone pass attempt of the drive, Josh Love was sacked for a one-yard loss by JaQuan Bailey.

I-State took over possession at the Spartan 48-yard line with Jacob Park as the quarterback. The newcomer completed four straight passes for 34 yards, including a pair to Carson Epps. Later, Park would hit Allen Lazard over the middle for 13 yards on 3rd-and-10 to set up 1st-and-goal at the two. Mike Warren then punched it into the end zone for his first touchdown of the season, giving the Cyclones a 17-3 lead with 9:32 left in the half.

San Jose State finally opened up its offense midway through the second quarter, trusting Love to throw the ball more. The redshirt freshman responded by completing 5-of-6 passes for 57 yards to put the team in the red zone. However, the ISU defense rose up on a 2nd-and-7 when Jhaustin Thomas sacked the quarterback for a five-yard loss. On 3rd-and-17, Bailey hit Love as he delivered a pass and ISU defensive back Jay Jones settled underneath it for the interception.

Yet another turnover from the defense gave the offense a shot in the arm, as it put more points on the board late in the half. Park rushed for 35 yards on a 2nd-and-8 to get the drive moving into SJSU territory. Four plays later it was Park hitting a wide open Dondre Daley in the left-corner of the end zone for a touchdown. The PAT pass from Park to Chandler fell incomplete and the Cyclones led 23-3 with 1:47 left in the half.

Advantage: Iowa State.
