First Quarter:
After holding San Jose State three-and-out to open the game and getting a 25-yard punt return from Trever Ryen, the Cyclones took possession at the opponent’s 34. Iowa State converted once on a 4th-and-1 when Mike Warren rushed for three yards. Three plays later, it was Joel Lanning connecting with Allen Lazard in the back-right corner of the end zone for a touchdown.
The play was originally ruled incomplete, but after review it was determined that the junior wide receiver dragged his left foot inbounds. ISU took a 7-0 lead with 10:40 left in the first quarter.
The Spartans responded with a ground-oriented attack, led by tailbacks Deontae Cooper and Zamore Zigler. Cooper rushed six times for 41 yards, before making way for Zigler who added six for 26.
However, with San Jose State looking at 1st-and-goal from the two, the Cyclone defense rose up with a big goal-line stop. Kamari Cotton-Moya made a pair tackles at the line of scrimmage, before Brian Mills busted through the middle to stop Zigler for a four-yard loss. The Spartans settled for a 22-yard field goal by Bryce Crawford, which cut the Cyclone lead to 7-3 with 3:24 left in the quarter.
Both sides traded turnovers in the latter stages of the first quarter. Lanning and Warren first connected for a big 38-yard gain near the right sideline, but the sophomore rusher lost a fumble. Spartan defender Andre Chachere forced the fumble and SJ Barnes recovered at the SJSU 39-yard line.
Two plays later, the Cyclones rose up with Jomal Wiltz picking off quarterback Josh Love and returning it 27 yards to the Spartan 32. I-State’s offense couldn’t do anything with the turnover and Cole Netten came on to convert a 49-yard field goal attempt. The Cyclones opened up a 10-3 lead with 53 seconds left in the quarter.
Advantage: Iowa State.
