Third Quarter:

After rallying to score a touchdown late in the first half, the Cowboys opened the second with possession and drove 92 yards for seven more points to cut their deficit to 24-21 with 8:44 remaining in the third quarter. OSU’s ground game did much of the damage during the 14-play drive, but it was a 32-yard pass play from Mason Rudolph to Marcell Ateman on a 3rd-and-11 that broke the backs of the ISU defenders. One play later, reserve quarterback J.W. Walsh kept for a one-yard touchdown run.

The Cyclone offense would at least pick up a pair of first downs, but was once again forced to punt after a Joel Lanning 3rd-and-10 pass fell incomplete. OSU took over possession at its own 24-yard line, but it was short-lived after linebacker Levi Peters forced and recovered a fumble after a Blake Jarwin catch over the middle.

The first turnover of the game on either side gave ISU the ball at the Cowboy 38-yard line. After a pair of incomplete passes brought up 3rd-and-10, Lanning kept for a 17-yard gain and a fresh set of downs. Then, on 1st-and-10 at the 21-yard line, the quarterback held onto it again and rushed into the end zone for a touchdown. The Cyclones grabbed a 31-21 lead with 2:04 left in the third quarter.

ISU's defense rose up again to force a three-and-out to give the offense the ball back before the end of the quarter.

Advantage: Iowa State.
