Second Quarter:

Once both teams switched sides, Oklahoma State’s fortunes quickly went downhill. Mason Rudolph’s first down pass fell incomplete, and then the quarterback was dropped for a three-yard loss on an option keeper. Rudolph picked up three yards on 3rd-and-13, leaving the Cowboys to attempt a short field goal. However, Ben Grogan’s 28-yard field goal sailed wide left and the score remained 17-7.

ISU’s offense kept the pressure on the Cowboys by scoring for the fourth time in four possessions, going 80 yards on 11 plays and keeping the ball for nearly four minutes. Joel Lanning continued to shred the OSU defense, keeping for six yards on a 2nd-and-10 and following that up with a gain of 22. The first-year starter also kept on a zone-read for a two-yard gain on 3rd-and-1 to set up Joshua Thomas’ one-yard plunge into the end zone. The Cyclones grabbed a 24-7 lead with 9:29 left in the half.

OSU got a much-needed touchdown shortly before the intermission to cut the Cyclone lead to 24-14. Chris Carson rushed for a one-yard touchdown with 2:14 left in the half. It capped off a Cowboy drive that went 88 yards in 16 plays and exhausted more than seven minutes.

ISU went three-and-out and didn’t put up points for the first time all game, and after Colin Downing’s punt the Cowboys got another opportunity with less than a minute to play and the ball at the seven-yard line.

Advantage: Iowa State.
