Any worries about an Iowa State offensive hangover from the past few weeks was put to rest on the opening drive, as it went 73 yards on 11 plays in just under five minutes to score a touchdown. Kyle Kempt completed 4-of-5 passes for 38 yards, including the 14-yard strike to Allen Lazard in the front-left corner of the end zone. Although he didn’t do much in his other four attempts, David Montgomery did manage a 12-yard run on the drive. The Cyclones opened up a 7-0 lead with 10:02 left in the quarter.

ISU’s defense did its part to give the offense the ball back with decent field position, holding the Cowboys to a three-and-out. Once again, Kempt and Montgomery shouldered the load on a scoring drive, going 64 yards on eight plays in a shade under four minutes. Montgomery went right on a rush before bouncing back left and finding the end zone from 22 yards out. Kempt did his part by completing 4-of-5 passes for 44 yards. The Cyclones opened up a 14-0 lead with 4:52 left in the first.

Oklahoma State awoke from its slumber late in the quarter, taking advantage of a personal foul penalty on the Cyclones and later a 21-yard pass play from Mason Rudolph to Marcell Ateman in the back of the end zone. Ateman leapt for a catch as cornerback D’Andre Payne was falling down. The score cut the Cyclones’ lead in half and made it 14-7 with 1:31 left in the quarter.

As the first quarter came to a close, the Cyclones looked to have gone three-and-out after Montgomery was stopped one yard short of a first down on a 3rd-and-7 pass from Kempt.

Advantage: Iowa State.
