First Quarter:

Head coach Paul Rhoads couldn’t have asked for much more out of his team on the opening possession of the game, as the Cyclones drove 75 yards on just six plays in a span of 1:50 for a touchdown. After hitting Quenton Bundrage for a 37-yard pass play on 2nd-and-7, quarterback Joel Lanning kept on a zone-read and rushed 24-yard touchdown.

Oklahoma State’s offense had an answer for the quick score, putting seven points on the board itself by going 81 yards on just nine plays. Quarterback Mason Rudolph completed 5-of-6 passes for 62 yards, including the touchdown connection with Marcell Ateman. The Cowboys tied the score at 7-7 with 9:44 remaining in the first quarter.

It was I-State’s turn to tack on seven more points of its own. After an ill-fated forward pass on the kickoff return cost them field position, the Cyclones still went 94 yards on just six plays to take a 14-7 lead with 6:58 left in the quarter. Mike Warren got things started with a 22-yard rush on the opening play, and Lanning took over from there, notching rushes of nine and 23 yards and then hitting Allen Lazard for a 24-yard touchdown pass.

Following a three-and-out from OSU, the Cyclones got the ball with great field position at their own 44-yard line. Lanning hit Lazard again for a huge gain, this time for 40 yards into the red zone. ISU faced a 3rd-and-2 from inside the five-yard line, but Lanning’s pass to Trever Ryen fell incomplete and Cole Netten came on for a 21-yard field goal. The kicker split the uprights and ISU led 17-7 with 3:04 left in the quarter.

The Cowboys were on the move as the first quarter expired, with a 1st-and-10 at the Cyclone 11-yard line.

Advantage: Iowa State.
