Second Quarter:
Iowa State went 11 plays and 77 yards before getting a 31-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Park to Allen Lazard. Cole Netten’s PAT cut the deficit to 14-10 with 11:15 left in the half and also gave the kicker the all-time leading scorer record in Ames, as he surpassed place-kicker Jeff Shudak. Park completed 5-of-6 passes for 67 yards on the drive. ISU converted on third down three times on the possession, twice on passes from Park and once on a 4-yard rush by Joel Lanning.
The Cyclone defense rose up and forced the Sooners to a four-and-out when Austin Seibert came up short on a 50-yard field goal attempt into a north wind. ISU took over with the ball at its own 32-yard line, but proceeded to go three-and-out and punt back to the Sooners.
Oklahoma went three-and-out on the ensuing possession and put the ball back in ISU’s hands in the final minutes of the half. It had great field position as well after a nice 26-yard punt return from Trever Ryen. The coaching staff would later face a decision on 4th-and-2 at the Sooner 41-yard line, opting to go for it and getting a long touchdown run from Lanning. I-State took a 17-14 lead with 4:25 left in the half.
However, the three-point lead was short-lived as the Sooners answered quickly with a 65-yard touchdown pass from Baker Mayfield to Dede Westbrook on the opening play of the next possession. The Sooners retook the lead 21-17 with 4:10 left in the half.
Oklahoma moved quickly to score in the waning moments of the half, going 75 yards on nine plays and using just 2:20 of clock before scoring a touchdown. Mayfield completed 4-of-6 passes for 58 yards, including the 11-yard strike to Westbrook. The Sooners jumped out to a 28-17 lead with just six seconds remaining in the half.
Advantage: Oklahoma.
