First Quarter:
Oklahoma got on the board first thanks to some big plays on the game’s initial possession. Baker Mayfield connected Jeffery Mead for 14 yards on a 3rd-and-9, then Abdul Adams carried 32 yards down close to the goal-line to set up 1st-and-goal. Two plays later, it was Mayfield and Mark Andrews hooking up on a six-yard touchdown. Oklahoma opened up a 7-0 lead with 12:31 left in the first quarter.
After seeing the offense muster just one first down before bringing on the punt unit, Iowa State’s defense was back on the field. This time, Jim Heacock’s defensive unit came up big. First it was Willie Harvey and Brian Peavy combining to sack Mayfield for a short loss on 2nd-and-13. Although Mayfield would hit Dimitri Flowers for 16 yards on 3rd-and-14, the defense forced a turnover when Jomal Wiltz came on a corner blitz and hit Mayfield as he was throwing. The ball eventually settled into the arms of defensive lineman Jhaustin Thomas. Iowa State took over with a first down at the Oklahoma 35.
With great field position, the offense wasn’t able to fully take advantage. Jacob Park connected with Allen Lazard for seven yards and Deshaunte Jones for five, but would soon make way for backup Joel Lanning. David Montgomery rushed for 11 yards to set up 1st-and-goal from the eight. However, a false start penalty would spell doom and Cole Netten later would come on to make a 27-yard field goal. I-State cut the deficit to 7-3 with 4:22 left in the quarter.
The Sooners answered ISU’s field goal with a touchdown of their own, going 75 yards on just seven plays and getting a 15-yard catch and run by Mead for a touchdown. The OU receiver evaded Nigel Tribune and two other defensive backs on his way to the end zone and 14-3 lead with 1:22 left in the quarter.
Advantage: Oklahoma.
