Third Quarter:
Although the offense didn’t do much on the opening possession of the third quarter – going three-and-out – the defense ensured that ISU kept its momentum with an impressive display on Kansas’ initial drive. Levi Peters and Trent Taylor smothered Montell Cozart for a nine-yard loss on 1st-and-10. Two plays later it was Jhaustin Thomas sacking the Jayhawk quarterback for a 10-yard loss on 3rd-and-17.
The Cyclones took over with great field position following the punt and immediately got a 62-yard rushing touchdown from Mike Warren who took it through the right side of the offensive line and was untouched on his way to the end zone. ISU took a 24-0 lead with 9:47 remaining in the third quarter. With the long scoring play, Warren became the first freshman in school history to post back-to-back 100-yard games.
Following an I-State three-and-out, the Jayhawks took over with great field position and took advantage quickly when Cozart hit a wide-open Tre’ Parmalee over the middle for a 47-yard touchdown pass. KU’s extra point failed, but it managed to cut the deficit to a 24-6 margin with 5:36 left in the quarter.
The Cyclones followed up with a 65-yard scoring drive of their own. Warren continued grinding out yards on the ground, rushing four times for 23 yards. Sam Richardson completed all three of his passes for 44 yards, including a 13-yard scoring throw to D’Vario Montgomery in the left corner of the end zone. ISU took a 31-6 lead with 2:15 remaining in the quarter.
KU went three-and-out on the ensuing drive thanks to even more pressure from the Cyclone defense. Willie Harvey sacked backup quarterback Ryan Willis for a nine-yard loss on 2nd-and-10. Wally Burnham’s unit also brought pressure on 3rd-and-19 and forced an errant throw.
As time expired on the third quarter, the Cyclones were once again on the march after Richardson found Dondre Daley for a 19-yard pass into the red zone.
Advantage: Iowa State.
