Third Quarter:

Matt Campbell rolled the dice to open the second half by opting for a Chris Francis onside kick. The placekicker recovered the ball 12 yards upfield to give the offense the ball. Jacob Park and company responded well by going 52 yards to score their first touchdown of the game. Park completed a timely 14-yard pass to Allen Lazard on a 3rd-and-9 to put the team in scoring position, and then later connected with Deshaunte Jones for a 24-yard touchdown pass. I-State cut the deficit to 17-10 with 12:08 left in the quarter.

Iowa State was unable to seize the momentum, however. KSU’s offense marched 85 yards in 14 plays and exhausted nearly seven minutes of time. The Wildcats converted three times on third down on the drive, once on a 3rd-and-10 and another on a 3rd-and-14 after a personal foul penalty on the Cyclones. Winston Dimel would later punch it in from one yard out on 3rd-and-goal to give KSU a 24-10 lead with 5:24 left in the quarter.

Although it got a huge 39-yard completion from Park to Carson Epps on the opening play, ISU was unable to answer its opponent’s score. Mike Warren rushed for one yard on first down, before Park threw an incompletion on 2nd-and-9. Park rushed for seven yards to set up a 4th-and-2, but his pass out in the flat to Sam Seonbuchner fell incomplete. ISU turned it over on downs with just over three minutes left in the quarter.

K-State turned to reserve rusher Alex Barnes to further assert control of the game. The redshirt freshman rushed five times for 37 yards, including the eight-yard touchdown to put the Wildcats in front 31-10 with 27 seconds left in the quarter.

Advantage: Kansas State.
