Second Quarter:

Two plays into the second quarter, the Wildcat offense scored its first touchdown of the game when Jesse Ertz completed an 11-yard pass to Deante Burton. It capped off a 13-play, 75-yard scoring drive that spanned nearly six minutes of clock.

Into the lineup for the first time, backup quarterback Jacob Park lasted just three plays before throwing an interception deep down the right sideline. K-State took over at its own 14-yard line and headed back towards Cyclone territory. The Wildcats would end up going 86 yards in 10 plays and using up more than five minutes to tack on another touchdown and go up 17-3 with 8:03 left in the half. This time it was Justin Silmon punching it in from three yards out.

ISU’s offensive woes continued on the ensuing drive, and largely in part to a receiving corps that didn’t make any plays. Park hit Allen Lazard for nine yards on the first play, and Park would later rush for 11 on 4th-and-1. But the drive stalled out after Deshaunte Jones and Trever Ryen dropped easy balls from Park. Ryen’s would have gone for a long touchdown down the middle of the field and cut the deficit to one score. Instead, the punt team came on yet again.

The Cyclones got a rare defensive stop late in the second quarter when defensive backs broke up three consecutive passes to bring out the Wildcat punt team. After the punt, ISU got a nice 11-yard gain from Mike Warren and 23-yard catch from Dondre Daley from Jacob Park to get near midfield. But on the final play of the first half, a scrambling Park was brought down for a big loss. K-State went into the locker room in control leading 17-3.

Advantage: Kansas State.
