First Quarter:

Iowa State’s opening offensive possession went nowhere and Colin Downing was called upon to punt just 1:25 into the game. Kansas State was poised for a touchdown in response after getting a 54-yard gain from quarterback Jesse Ertz on 3rd-and-2. The Wildcats would get a 2nd-and-goal at the one-yard line after a nine-yard run by Charles Jones, but ISU’s defense rose tall and held the offense to a 23-yard field goal by Matthew McCrane. K-State took a 3-0 lead with 10:12 left in the quarter.

Thanks in large part to Joel Lanning, the Cyclone offense got in gear midway through the first. The junior quarterback completed 3-of-4 passes for 27 yards and rushed four times for 42 yards to help get his team into the red zone. However, KSU’s defense rose up and halted the drive at the six-yard line and brought out the kicking unit. Cole Netten converted on a 23-yard field goal to tie the score at 3-3 with 5:23 left in the quarter.

As the opening quarter expired, the Wildcat offense was on the move again with the ball 2-and-6 at the ISU 23-yard line. Ertz had completed 3-of-5 passes for 25 yards, and the offense had converted three times on third down.

Advantage: Kansas State.
