Second Quarter:
Both offenses struggled to do much of anything in the early parts of the second quarter, as the Cyclones went three-and-out on consecutive drives and Kansas only managed a pair of first downs on a couple drives before a pair of punts. I-State fans did get their first at-home glimpse of Joel Lanning, albeit for just one hand-off to Trever Ryen.
ISU mounted its most successful possession midway through the second quarter, going 62 yards on six plays to score the first touchdown of the game. Sam Richardson completed a 30-yard pass to tight end Justin Chandler on a 2nd-and-8 to put his team in the red zone. Lanning came in to rush for 15 on the following play, before Richardson kept it himself to walk into the end zone from four yards out. ISU grabbed a 10-0 lead with 5:40 left in the half.
After another Jayhawk drive went nowhere, the Cyclones took over and punched it into the end zone again. Richardson hooked up with Allen Lazard on a slant route that went nine yards for the touchdown and ISU led 17-0 with 27 seconds remaining in the half. ISU’s starting quarterback found his rhythm on this drive, completing all six of his passes for 61 yards including one to Quenton Bundrage over the middle that went for 33.
Advantage: Iowa State.
