First Quarter:
Kansas took possession to open the game and was relatively sharp in the passing game, marching near the Iowa State red zone. Montell Cozart completed 5-of-6 passes for 37 yards and the Jayhawks advanced to the I-State 21-yard line for a 4th-and-1, but a false start penalty brought out the field goal unit. Matthew Wyman missed a 42-yard attempt and the game remained scoreless with 11:12 left in the quarter.
Iowa State took possession at its own 26-yard line and had a pretty successful first drive, although one that would end in the same manner as Kansas’. Mike Warren rushed three times for 44 yards and Sam Richardson completed 2-of-3 passes for nine yards. However, the drive stalled deep in Kansas territory and Netten came on to miss a 28-yard field goal.
After a Kansas three-and-out, the Cyclones took over with great field position at their opponent’s 48-yard line. Richardson connected with Dondre Daley for 12 yards and a first down and Ben Boesen for seven more on 2nd-and-10. However, the drive would again fizzle and Netten came on for a 34-yard field goal attempt. This time, the junior split the uprights to give his team a 3-0 lead with 1:54 left in the quarter.
Advantage: Iowa State.
