Third Quarter:

Iowa State did nothing to take advantage of having the momentum and possession to open the second half, going three-and-out and getting a lackluster punt from Colin Downing to the Iowa 38-yard line.

Iowa seized the momentum for itself, getting two seven-yard runs and a five-yarder out of Jordan Canzeri and an 11-yard pass from CJ Beathard to Matt VandeBerg. On 1st-and-10, Beathard dropped back and hit Henry Krieger Coble near the goal-line, but the tight end fumbled and Vandeberg was there to scoop it up and run into the end zone. The Hawkeyes tied the score at 17-17 with 10:05 left in the third.

Sam Richardson and the offense couldn’t get going on the ensuing possession, as the quarterback misfired on four of his five pass attempts and the Cyclones were forced to punt once again.

Iowa went three-and-out on its possession, thanks in large part to some nice defensive pressure from all corners. Jhaustin Thomas and others forced an errant throw on 2nd-and-8, and then it was Dale Pierson pressuring CJ Beathard on third down. I-State got good field position at its own 41-yard line to start the next possession.

ISU’s offensive woes continued as the third quarter came to a conclusion. Richardson misfired on one pass and was bailed out on another incompletion when defensive holding gave him a fresh set of downs. But Iowa’s pressure got to Richardson for a nine-yard loss and 2nd-and-9, which would lead to another Cyclone punt.

Advantage: Even.
